The presence of coffee culture in Greek history can be traced all the way back to the 1600s, when the very first coffee houses were established in Greece.

Greek Coffee is prepared using coffee beans that have been roasted and then very finely pulverised. The pulverised beans are then mixed in with water and sugar (optional), and prepared in a small aluminium or copper pot, called a briki, over low heat. Greek coffee has a very strong and bitter flavour that can be counterbalanced by the addition of sugar.

Greek Coffee can be prepared four ways:

  1. Sketos – Plain, with no sugar.
  2. Oligi – Prepared with a little sugar.
  3. Metrios – equal parts coffee to sugar.
  4. Glykos – very sweet, with more sugar than coffee.
